As a Northumberland wedding photographer, I’ve had the honour of capturing countless beautiful moments during civil ceremonies. If you’re planning yours and wondering how it all unfolds, let me walk you through it.
A civil ceremony is a simple yet deeply meaningful occasion, filled with love and personal touches. It’s non-religious, so you have the freedom to make it uniquely yours while still fulfilling the legal requirements of marriage.

Before the Ceremony
Before guests arrive, the registrars will meet with each of you separately. This is a chance to confirm all the details and go over any last-minute decisions. For example, you might want to let them know if you prefer your guests to avoid posting on social media during the ceremony. Once the formalities are done, it’s time for the magic to begin.
Guests Assemble
As your guests take their seats, the registrar typically makes a brief safety announcement and offers a warm welcome. There’s an excited hum in the room as everyone eagerly awaits the big moment—the entrance of the wedding party.

The Processional
This is where it all starts to feel real. Whether you’re walking down the aisle to classical strings, a favourite song, or something beautifully unique, the processional sets the tone for the day. It’s always such a joy to capture the emotions on your faces—and those of your guests—as you make your entrance.
The Ceremony
The registrar will formally welcome everyone before getting to the legal bits: confirming that you’re both free and happy to marry and giving anyone the chance to voice a legal objection (don’t worry—there’s almost always silence here!). Then comes the heart of the ceremony: exchanging vows and rings. These moments are filled with emotion and often a few happy tears.
You can personalise the ceremony with secular readings, poems, or even stories that mean something special to you. While religious content isn’t allowed in a civil ceremony, there’s still so much scope to make it feel personal and reflective of your relationship.

The Signing and the Recessional
Once you’ve said “I do,” the legal bit is completed by signing the register, along with your two witnesses. This is when I’ll be snapping away to capture those beautiful moments of you as a newly married couple.
Finally, the recessional—your grand exit as newlyweds! This is always a joyous, celebratory moment as you head off to start the rest of your day.

It’s Official—You’re Married!
Civil ceremonies usually last around 20-30 minutes, but in that short time, you’ll experience a whirlwind of emotion, connection, and love. From start to finish, it’s an incredible journey—and as your photographer, I’ll be there to document every magical moment.
If you’re planning a Northumberland wedding and looking for a photographer to capture your civil ceremony, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s create memories you’ll treasure forever.
